UBC’s fourth annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition has kicked off with a flurry of outstanding presentations as graduate students challenge themselves and each other to inform us about their research in just three minutes. This year more than 80 graduate students have taken on the challenge to participate, have honed their public speaking skills, and competed in faculty & department organized heats over 4 weeks of competition. Next week’s semi‐ final and final rounds promises to be a wonderful showcase of graduate student research where heat winners will show us how it should be done, clearly and powerfully articulating their research into a 3‐minute oration to a general audience.
This opportunity to reach a global audience is bigger than ever. UBC’s first place finisher will advance to a regional completion hosted in May at the University of Calgary. Top finishers from that competition will go on to contend for national honours in a virtual completion sponsored by the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS)
Join us in the audience as we cheer on four Applied Science students during the semi-final and (hopefully!) final rounds and experience the student’s passion for their work and their ability to share its purpose and direction with clarity and passion.
