Digital-age kids in traditional paper-making craft

Hand-made paper found a sweet spot at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival at Jericho Beach Park on the weekend of July 15 and 16 when researchers from UBC’s Pulp and Paper Centre volunteered personalized paper-making sessions to children.

Prof. Nuwan Sella Kapu, and researchers Daniel Paterson, Ehsan Zaman and Mohammad ShanbGhazani, and his wife Solmaz (formerly with PPC) guided children to make their own paper as a special keepsake. The children decorated their own handiwork with dried maple leaves or shiny sequins.

Needless to say, our volunteer task force was kept busy answering questions from keen parents and interested kids, giving demonstrations and creating paper. Other volunteers too joined in the fun and to give a helping hand at the tables.
